Sewered!

Sewered!, a single player level for Fallout 3, contains a main quest and one side quest.  The level flows between a small world space and several interior spaces. In a post nuclear apocalypse world, the player must discover what happen to their family in the sewers of New York.  The player chooses between direct action and sneaking through the sewers.  Sewered!  accents the dark world of Fallout with humorous moments/characters set against the bleak background of a post apocalyptic world.  To keep the world always in a dark state, several scripts run in the background essentially freezing time and keeping this level in an unending night.

In the sewers, the player can follow a blood trail off a beaten path and come to a room with horror.  The sound of dripping blood reveals that this was a fresh kill.  This scene helps add to the dark world of Fallout, rewards those who like to explore, and also gives a fear or the unknown in the sewers.

The sewers leads into a large cave system.  A subway train wreck shows that the nuclear apocalypse above the sewers reached this far down.  Radioactive mushrooms illuminate a trail in the cave leading the player towards the goal of the side quest.

The toxic barrels and water giving off light gives the idea that the water is not potable and keeps with the Fallout 3 theme of toxic radioactive water.  A design goal was to give a natural way to light the cave in an unnatural manner, the subway train fire, radioactive mushrooms, and dirty water completes this goal.

A humorous moment of running into a man racing miniature mole rats.  The rat race provides a sense of irony, as the player also is running around a maze trying to reach a goal.

The final area of Sewered!  has the player running into a evil witch doing horrible experiments on various creatures and people.  Upon talking to the witch, the player discovers that the witch killed their family.  The witch pleads for forgiveness begging the player to give her mercy, and in turn she will provide useful information on the crime boss that put her up to such an act.  The player is presented a moral choice of either killing the witch or forgiving her.  With such a dark moment, the skeleton lamp (on the left of the screen) provides a little environmental humor to brighten the situation.

Going through a maintenance access tunnel in the sewers leads to a raider hideout.  The player can sneak through the facility or take the raiders head on.  A light fog in this area provides a sense of “lived in” atmosphere to these tunnels.
